Families

It is possible for your child to recover, and for your family to heal.

If your child is struggling with an eating disorder or disordered eating, it is a scary place to be.

We are a specialized team of therapists and dietitians who help children and families recover from an eating disorder. We work in partnership with your family to create a comprehensive plan that supports all members involved. We believe that caregivers should be involved in their child’s recovery and help their child heal from the eating disorder.

Here’s what our past clients say:

  • “I’m so grateful for the help I've gotten from Zoe. She and I connected much more authentically and so differently than I have with other therapists, in a way that helped me to feel supported from the get go. She has helped me to transform my relationship with food and my body in a way I didn’t think was possible. I can’t thank her enough for the positive change she’s helped bring into my life." - Ally

  • "Kristen has played a vital role in our daughter’s ED recovery. Her patience, persistence, empathy and in-depth knowledge of EDs have guided us every step of the way. It is incredibly heart-warming to see our daughter come alive again! I highly recommend Kristen for your recovery journey.” Silvia

  • "I am incredibly grateful for finding Alex when I did. She helped me through an incredibly tough part of my life and allowed me to heal, to look after myself, and to be a better person in the world." - Caylee

  • "Adding a dietitian to my care team as I started my recovery journey was one of the best decisions I could have made. It allowed me to continue to focus on the overarching problems during therapy and focus on the behaviors and specific eating disorder thoughts that came up with my dietician. It was especially helpful when the two were in communication with one another too because they were able to work together and plan sessions that addressed the same issue but with their own approaches and areas of expertise." - Anna

Our Approach

We use Family Based Treatment (FBT) as one of our primary approaches for children and teens struggling with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, ARFID and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED).  Research has consistently shown FBT to be one of the most effective treatment methods, providing families with the tools and support needed to help their child recover. FBT is not for everyone - but we try and tailor our approach to uniquely fit into your family’s needs.

Why we recommend including the family?

  • Evidence shows that the most effective and sustainable interventions for children and adolescents with eating disorders involve the family

  • FBT is conducted in an outpatient setting, making it an excellent alternative to inpatient care when medically appropriate

  • This approach empowers families to support their child’s recovery with nutritional rehabilitation, weight restoration, and encouraging variety during mealtimes

  • FBT does not blame the parents for causing an eating disorder. Instead, FBT involves parents to be a crucial part of the caregiving team to help nourish their child to health

  • You know your child better than anyone! Your treatment team will collaborate with you on how to effectively and efficiently feed your child

  • An eating disorder affects all family members - by involving the family in treatment, everyone can receive healing

We will provide an effective support plan that is highly individualized to your child and family. We use Family Based Therapy (FBT), nutrition education, cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention, Internal Family Systems, and other evidence-based modalities in our work.

We also help you navigate the German/European health system and partner with other members of your child’s team, like medical doctors or psychiatrists, to ensure you get the best care.

We recommend working with a dietitian and a therapist together, as they each provide complementary services and collaborate on care. For more on what a dietitian/nutrition can provide click here. For what a therapist does, click here.
